Giveaway: "Disturb Us, Lord" Print
Sir Francis Drake is thought to have written a beautiful prayer called, Disturb us, Lord. Nearly nine years ago, when the story found within the pages of From Lost to Found began, I was living a life that was going just exactly as I planned it. It was a life built with performance, perfectionism and control and maintained with personal achievement and others’ accolades and approval. Disturb us, Lord was the prayer I didn’t know to pray.
No one tells you that being comfortable is the worst thing that can happen to you. I was not looking to be rescued from the life I always wanted and worked hard to achieve. But I had been dreaming dreams that were too small and was content with a life that I could make with my own two hands.
I used to think that the enemy keeps us enslaved only by making us miserable. But I’m learning that one of the ways the enemy holds us captive is to make us comfortable without Christ. He gives us the illusion that the good life is a self-constructed story in which we are at the center, instead of a God-breathed story of grace in which we are transformed and called to empty ourselves to those around us. I envisioned Christ’s pursuit of me as a rescue from unwanted circumstances. But sometimes God’s rescue looks prying our fingers off what we think we want so that we can receive what we need—a gracious disturbance.
I’ll admit, these are not easy words to pray. But over time, with practice, we begin to recognize that we are blessed when we experience an enflamed longing for Christ and are in a position of being fully dependent on Him.
As luck would have it, one of my favorite artists, Lindsay Letters, has a lettered art canvas of this very prayer. These words have served as a powerful reminder to me to trade in what I think I want for what will set me free!
